Portland Poker in Peril

May 6, 2013 Jordan Greene Poker World

Portland, Oregon’s poker rooms are in peril, due to a new bill introduced in the Oregon legislature. According to reports, the change in law is intended to correct the proliferation of card rooms in the State that emerged after the State enacted social gaming laws in the 1980s. The new bill will place limits on prior laws making games of chance legal by allowing only religious, charitable and fraternal organizations to run the games.

Opponents of the new bill point to the fact that under current laws, the house makes no actual money from the poker directly, which is rake-free. Also, poker, unlike other games of chance, is, according to opponents, a game of skill, rather than a pure game of luck. Others caution that the law will simply make the games move underground, which would hurt the integrity and safety of the games.

Good luck, Oregon.
