For the last decade, poker has been a popular route to obtaining donations for various worthy causes around the world. There is probably no finer example than the Big One for One Drop at the WSOP, which boasted a $1,000,000 buy-in, 11.111% of which went to charity.
Alas, Kansas hates poker more than it like charity, because a recent statement by Kansas gambling regulators has confirmed that poker for charity is illegal in the state. The result is that The Garden City Telegram has canceled a poker charity event that was to help fund its Newspapers in Education program.
Congratulations, Kansas! You’ve effectively prevents a charity designed to aid in the education of your youth. I guess if they want to learn, the kids will have to pick up useful hobbies and extra-curricular activities. I hear poker is good for learning math and probability! Get to it, kids of Kansas!
